BRADENTON, Fla. -
University of Northern Iowa pitchers Nick Kirk and Guido Fonseca combined to allow just one run and six hits through 14 innings, helping the Panthers beat Northwestern in a pair of seven-inning games Friday in Bradenton, Fla. The victories put the Panthers on a six-game win streak. UNI won the first game 6-0 and picked up a 2-1 victory in the second.
Kirk (2-3) allowed just two hits to help UNI earn a 6-0 shutout in game one. The junior struck out seven on the way to his second victory of the season.
Travis Hendrix hit a two-out single with the bases loaded to score Brett Douglas and Brandon Douglas in the top of the fourth. Cory Ege drew a walk to reload the bases, and Dane Embury hit a bases-clearing double to give the Panthers a 5-0 lead.
UNI (10-8) added another run in the top of the fifth on a single from Chris Lopez that scored Deric Manrique.
Lopez was 2-of-4 with the RBI, and Embury finished 1-of-4 with three RBIs on the game.
In game two, Fonseca (4-0) allowed just four hits and one run throughout seven innings, striking out eight in the processes and not issuing a walk.
Cory Ege drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the third. Embury followed with a single, and Manrique singled to plate Ege, putting UNI on the board first 1-0. Brandon Douglas walked to reload the bases, and Lopez followed with another walk to send Embury home. UNI left the bases loaded in the inning, but the two runs were enough for the win.
Northwestern (4-7) used two hits and a Panther error in the bottom of the fifth to score the Wildcats' only run of the day.
UNI wraps up its road trip to Florida when it plays Dartmouth at 1:30 p.m.
