Team USA Rolls to 84-26 Win Over Angola at World University Games
Aug. 10, 2007 Bangok, Thailand - Jordan Eglseder scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the United States rolled to an 84-26 win over Angola in men's basketball action at the World University Games. The 7-1 Eglseder connected on 6-of-8 shots from the floor and was 4-for-4 from the foul line. He was one of four Team USA players to reach double figures, as guard Jared Josten scored 13, and center Eric Coleman and guard Kerwin Dunham each chipped in with 10. Angola was led by Wilson Joao with 12 points. The United States shot 55 percent from the field for the game (32-of-58) while Angola connected on just 13 percent of its shots (8-for-60). Team USA also held a decided edge in rebounding, 48-27. Team USA got off to a hot start, hitting seven of its first eight shots from the field, and held a 23-5 lead after the first quarter. Eight different United States players scored during the first period, with Adam Koch, Josten and Eglseder leading the way with four apiece. Eglseder and Coleman each grabbed three boards in the first period, as the United States held a 10-3 lead in rebounding. The USA took a 41-11 lead into halftime. Angola hit just 2-of-23 shots from the floor in the first half (8 percent), and did not make a two-point field goal (0-for-14). Joao had nine of Angola's 11 first half points. Meanwhile, the United States shot 62 percent in the opening half (17-for-27), and held a 22-9 advantage on the glass. The United States went inside often in the first two quarters, as the trio of Coleman, Koch and Eglseder combined for 22 points and 13 rebounds.
The United States extended its lead to more than 60 points in second half and cruised to the win. Team USA did suffer an injury, as in the third quarter, guard Carlton Reed suffered a broken bone in his right foot and will miss the remainder of the tournament. With the victory, Team USA finished second in Group B with a 1-1 record. By finishing in the top two of its three-team group, the USA advances to the second phase of pool play. The Representing Team USA at the World University Games this summer is the University of Northern Iowa of the Missouri Valley Conference, under the direction of second-year head coach Ben Jacobson.
