MVC Results Day 1

The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team stands in sixth place after two rounds of play at the 2008 State Farm MVC Men's Golf Championships on the par-71 Davenport Country Club.

 

The Panthers opened with a first-round score of 301 but countered with a score of 297 in the second to finish with a 598 on the first day of competition.

 

Senior Andy White paced the Panthers with a second-place finish after the first two rounds, carding a three-under-par score of 139. White fired a 70 on the first 18 holes and posted a two-under-par 69 in the second round. White was only one of four players to break 70 at the tournament.

 

Sophomore Kyle Bermel and senior Jordan Weber stand tied for 21st place through the first 36 holes with identical scores of 151. The duo each fired a low round of 74.

 

Sophomore Troy Hoffman is tied for 38th place with a two-round score of 157. Hoffman fired a low round 77 in the second.

 

Senior Brook Maher (Monroe, Iowa/Prairie City-Monroe) stands tied for 43rd place after the first two opening rounds with a score of 161. Maher shot a low-round score of 80.

 

Pre-championship favorite Wichita State leads the pack with a commanding 15-stroke lead after posting a second round team score of 279. The Shockers stand with a 566 overall and lead second-place Southern Illinois (291-290=581).

 

While Wichita State has a 15-stroke lead over the second-place Salukis, the middle of the pack is up for grabs as four strokes separate five teams from third to seventh place.  Creighton and Evansville are knotted at 595, while Drake is in fifth at 597.  Northern Iowa is right behind at 598, and Illinois State is at 599.  Missouri State is eighth with a team score of 606, and Bradley is ninth with 626.

 

Individually, Wichita State's Connor McHenry is the tournament leader Conor McHenry after 36 holes.  McHenry fired a tournament-low 66 in the second round to finish the day at a four-under-par 138. 

 

Tuesday's final 18-hole round begins at 8 a.m. as teams will go off No. 1 (Creighton, Drake, Northern Iowa, Evansville, Southern Illinois, and Wichita State) and No. 10 (Illinois State, Missouri

State, Bradley).
