The University of Northern Iowa women's golf team finished with a strong performance Tuesday, placing third at the Diablo Grande Golf Course in Patterson, Calif., hosted by Drake University.

The Panthers were led by junior Heather Frye (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and sophomore Molly Schemm (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson), as the duo tied for 15th place with identical scores of 247. Frye fired a pair of 79s in both the second and third rounds. Schemm carded an 84 in the second round, but countered with a low round of 76 in the third.

"Molly always comes through for us," said UNI head coach John Bermel. "She really stepped up for us in the last round and pulled out a 76 to make sure we held on to our third place finish. The more pressure she feels the better she performs and that's good to see."

"Heather also had a really nice tournament," said Bermel. "She played well for us and you could tell in the practice round that she was hitting the ball solid. Her performance throughout the season is going to really help the team."

Sophomore Ann Arnason (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) finished the tournament tied for 19th place, with a score of 249 and a low round of 76.

Redshirt Freshman Sabrina Danielson (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Southeast Polk) finished in 25th place in her first tournament as a Panther with a score of 251 and low round of 74.

"Sabrina played a nice solid tournament this weekend," said Bermel. "I think she was a little nervous after the first round and the conditions were tough, but to come back and shoot a 74 in the second round shows a lot of potential."

Junior Kim Weber (Bernard, Iowa/Cascade) finished in 33rd place with a score of 259. Weber recorded a low round of 81 in the second to round things out for the Panthers.

UNI finished third overall with a team score of 989. The University of Minnesota won the tournament with a score of 952. The University of Southern Illinois was second with a score 962.

The Panthers finished ahead of MVC rivals Drake University and Wichita State while following close behind the Salukis from Southern Illinois.

"This tournament gives us a lot of confidence," said Bermel. "This was our first tournament of the spring season and to finish above Drake and close to Southern Illinois was a great feeling. They've already had other tournaments this spring and plenty of practice. We still have some work to do as a team but I was very happy with our performance this weekend. We're going to be right there with the leaders at the Missouri Valley Conference tournament."

The Panthers continue their spring season next week as they travel to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas for the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Classic. The three-day tournament will be played at the Diamante Golf Course, March 24 and 25.
