IOWA CITY, Iowa-University of Northern Iowa sophomore Abby Girard (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) earned runner-up honors in two individual events for the Panthers Friday night as they fell to in-state rival Iowa, 132-70.

 

Girard's first second-place finish was in the 200 individual medley, which she completed in a personal-best time of 2:11.63.  Junior Abby Moes (Sioux City, Iowa/East) took third with a time of 2:17.61, while freshman Ashley Mangrich (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) finished fourth (2:20.97).

 

Girard's other runner-up event was the 200 backstroke.  She clocked in at 2:09.64, while Moes took fourth place in 2:12.55.

 


 

 

Freshman Josie Itzen (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) swam the 200 freestyle in 1:57.94 to take second place.  She later finished fourth in the 100 free, with a time of 54.84.

 

Fellow-freshman Kelly McCullough (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer) took second in the 1,000 free, clocking in at 11:03.59.  Junior Melissa Little (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) came in third (11:06.55), with Junior Katie Maloy (Auburn, Ind./R. Nelson Snider) finishing fourth (11:09.22).

 

Sophomore Andrea Grandcolas (Wentzville, Mo./Wentzville) set a personal-best in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.99), earning second place.  Freshman Caitlin Krengel (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago) took third in a time of 2:35.87, while Mangrich came in fourth (2:36.53).

 

Mangrich's twin, April, clocked in at 5:22.70 to take runner-up honors in the 500 free.  Sophomore Kelly Mateas (Winfield, Ill./Community) finished third (5:25.23) and Maloy was fourth (5:29.10).

 

UNI's 400-yard medley relay team consisting of Girard, Ashley Mangrich, sophomore Maggie Rickert (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) and Itzen finished second in a time of 4:07.30. 

 

The 200 free relay team also came in second.  Rickert, junior Maegan Miller (Olathe, Kan./Olathe), sophomore Alexa Armstrong (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) and senior Jamie Keefer (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer) finished the event in 1:42.57.

 

The Panthers will return to the pool tomorrow (Feb. 2) when they host a double dual against Grinnell College and Morningside College.  The action will begin at 1 p.m.
